Can You Handle the Truth?

Can You Handle the Truth_2 Tim 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Study what? Not ashamed of what you’re studying, rightly divide the Word of Truth.

John 17:17 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

We live in an age where truth is under attack. People question the existence of absolute truth. We live in a Joshua generation which has lost the Moses way of life. Postmodernism and young people raised in a society and culture are opposed to doctrine and theology. Sound Biblical teaching is looked upon as a thing of the past. This is a dangerous mindset. It is delighting in moving beyond the Bible. It brings compromise.

Why is Truth so important?

To strongly affirm truth somehow makes you intolerant and unloving. Truth is on trial. It is being attacked. Truth is under attack. Of course, the Bible has numerous appeals to stand firm on truth.

1 Cor 15:1-4 “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

Believing is more than just agreeing with something. You have to walk it and be it and live it. In ‘rightly dividing the Word of truth,’ work needs to be done.

1 Cor 15:8 “And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.”

Truth matters. It is a matter of life and death.

Truth is not some generic Jesus or generic salvation or generic faith. This is specific, specific about Jesus, salvation, and faith. Truth is not relative. It doesn’t matter if you believe it or rebel against it. Truth doesn’t change. Truth is not political or take bribes or emotions or shifting or swayed. Truth stays the truth. It’s immovable and unshakable. Truth is stable.

What does it mean to believe something? How do your beliefs change the way you live?

The Constitution of the US is changeable. Truth is not.

What unifies a people? There is something here in the midst of all of our ideologies in a category all by itself. This is truth. It is not influenced by other agendas. Truth is not controlled by money or some other powers. Hashtags will not change truth.

Truth is something under attack today. True, saving faith has a specific object. The reality of Jesus, His death on the cross and resurrection and outpouring of the Holy Ghost is an absolute necessity. You’ve got to have His death and burial and resurrection and the outpouring of the Holy Ghost.

People can choose what they believe, the earth is flat vs the earth is round and start movements based on those beliefs. It doesn’t matter what you believe, truth is truth. The earth is round, a sphere. Truth doesn’t have an opinion about what you believe. Truth is just truth.

Is your lifestyle reflecting truth? Are you walking in truth?

The Corinthians were in agreement with what Paul said. There was a definite foundation to the church’s beginning. If we change that foundation, we have ruined the entire structure of Christianity.

Jesus died and was buried and rose from the dead and poured out His Spirit.

Where do we find out about this Gospel? How can we know that this Gospel is the Truth?

There are things that are connected to this Gospel, this Truth. People will accuse you if you hold this truth. They will say you are unloving and intolerant.

Jesus will save you.

The emergent truth movement is coming from the idea of tolerance and their version of love. If you mention the Bible you will get blasted by the media. If you don’t agree with the ideas of the world’s views, you are deemed evil and your reputation will be shot. There is pressure to conform.

Pressure comes against people who love truth. Truth is exclusive. The very essence and nature of truth is there is a false. To say there is false is offensive. Let the accusations come. Stand firm. ‘Thy Word is truth.’

People believe God is love. John 3:16 is a favorite verse. The verses after are exclusive, however.

John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

‘In the Beginning was the Word and that Word was God. Thy Word is truth.’

Psalm 43:3 “O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.”

Truth is a lamp and a light. Truth leads you.

If you’re looking for a spiritual encounter, you’ll find an experience, but if you’re searching for truth, you will find Jesus Christ every time. There is no other truth out there. If you will be led by truth, you will be led to Jesus.

Psalm 51:6 “Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

Psalm 119:142 “Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.”

Prov 23:23 “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.”

Do you desire truth? Are you willing to change according to truth?

There is a movement in this world that will try to make you feel wrong and unloving and fearful. The truth will save you in the end.

Isaiah 59:1-17 “Listen! The Lord’s arm is not too weak to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call. 2 It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore. 3 Your hands are the hands of murderers, and your fingers are filthy with sin. Your lips are full of lies, and your mouth spews corruption. 4 No one cares about being fair and honest. The people’s lawsuits are based on lies. They conceive evil deeds and then give birth to sin. 5 They hatch deadly snakes and weave spiders’ webs. Whoever eats their eggs will die; whoever cracks them will hatch a viper. 6 Their webs can’t be made into clothing, and nothing they do is productive. All their activity is filled with sin, and violence is their trademark. 7 Their feet run to do evil, and they rush to commit murder. They think only about sinning. Misery and destruction always follow them. 8 They don’t know where to find peace or what it means to be just and good. They have mapped out crooked roads, and no one who follows them knows a moment’s peace. 9 So there is no justice among us, and we know nothing about right living. We look for light but find only darkness. We look for bright skies but walk in gloom. 10 We grope like the blind along a wall, feeling our way like people without eyes. Even at brightest noontime, we stumble as though it were dark. Among the living, we are like the dead. 11 We growl like hungry bears; we moan like mournful doves. We look for justice, but it never comes. We look for rescue, but it is far away from us. 12 For our sins are piled up before God and testify against us. Yes, we know what sinners we are. 13 We know we have rebelled and have denied the Lord. We have turned our backs on our God. We know how unfair and oppressive we have been, carefully planning our deceitful lies. 14 Our courts oppose the righteous, and justice is nowhere to be found. Truth stumbles in the streets, and honesty has been outlawed. 15 Yes, truth is gone, and anyone who renounces evil is attacked. The Lord looked and was displeased to find there was no justice. 16 He was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So he himself stepped in to save them with his strong arm, and his justice sustained him. 17 He put on righteousness as his body armor and placed the helmet of salvation on his head. He clothed himself with a robe of vengeance and wrapped himself in a cloak of divine passion.”

John 8:32 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 18:37 “Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”

John 18:38 “Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

Pilate didn’t even wait around to find out!

John 14:9 “Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?”

John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Truth gets you saved. Truth is not a book or a doctrine. Truth is a person. Truth is JESUS.

How does knowing that Jesus is Truth change you?

2 Cor 11:3-4 “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”

2 Thes 2:9-12 “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

2 Tim 4:3-4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

Are you willing to walk in truth even though the world chooses not to? What does that look like?
