The Rest of Your Life, Part 3: The Troubled Sea

Is 57:20-21 “But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.”

Job 15:20-25 “The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.”

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe speaks of the torment of a wicked person. The story is about a premeditated murder. The narrator spends time trying to convince readers of his sanity but his mind is very troubled. He ends up confessing and self-destructing.

There are people who can’t relax because they are tormented, not murderers like this, but souls without peace. They can’t handle the presence of the Lord. Their minds are like the tossing of the waves of the sea. They need the rest of their lives. God can give them rest.

There is an uneasiness about sin. Secret sins need a sharp knife. God is precise in his surgery. He will heal you. ‘Everything will be all right. Just rest.’

In Macbeth, by Shakespeare, Lady Macbeth committed murder and the guilt drove her nuts. She said, ‘Out…spot!’ She believed she saw a spot of blood on her hand and tried to get it off. This wave crashes in on her peace. She couldn’t clean herself. Finally, the torment of her mind caused her to confess the whole thing.

Sin can destroy the rest of your life.

There is no peace for the guilty. Come to Jesus. Get rid of that baggage. Let there be a shift in your mental stability.

James 1:8 “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Torment has a source that you can get rid of. Jesus will trade you your junk and give you gold. You must give up that sin.

Rom 3:10-18 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Genesis 4:7 “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”

An old Eskimo wolf trap involves killing an animal and dipping a machete in the blood. They leave it overnight and allow the blood to freeze. The wolves smell the blood and lick it. Because it’s so cold, the wolves’ tongues don’t realize they are licking the hidden knife inside. Soon, they are cutting themselves and drinking their own blood and eventually they die.

The devil doesn’t show up like an awful monster. He shows up looking good. He is like a boa constrictor and slowly squeezes the life out of you.

God has rest for your life if you will repent and leave that sin at an altar.

Prov 4:16-17 “For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.”

James 1:6-8 “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

Your fickle mind affects everything in your life. You say, ‘Why me, God?’ At church you put your heavy load on the altar, then you pick it back up and carry it some more.

The Holy Ghost does not evaporate. He’s not gasoline. Leave your worries and cares at the altar and don’t pick them back up!

Instead, pick up faith, joy, love, and hope!

James is like the New Testament Proverbs.

James 1:5 “ If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

Don’t worry about decisions, pray! Don’t blabber your worries to God. Instead pray and choose to trust Him to care for you! (1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”)

If you don’t think God hears you, how can you have peace?

God wants you to be either hot or cold. Being double-minded, or lukewarm, makes God sick!

Rev 3:16 “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

Mat 6:22-24 “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon [money].”

Make up your mind! You can’t go east and west at the same time.

Mat 6:25-30 “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?”

You’re not a Christian just because you show up to church! There are things you must let go of in order to have rest. There is so much peace and joy and love in walking with Jesus!

1 Kings 18:21 “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.”

There are two ways, two choices. How long will you waver? Choose! Don’t wait too long! It’s good and peaceful on the side of giving your life to the Lord! It’s a good day to make up your mind.

Make up your mind for the rest of your life.

2 Corinthians 6:17 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

When you don’t make a difference between godly things and ungodly things, God will allow things in your life so you won’t stay in that ungodly state.

Ez 22:26 “Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.”

You can’t have pornography and be a Christian. You can’t have unforgiveness and be a Christian. Deal with your sin or you won’t have rest. You can’t have both.

Mark what’s holy and what’s unholy and choose!

The first commandment that was broken was the keeping of the Sabbath, REST!
