Making Room for Jesus

011-jesus-birthLuke 2:1-7 “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Have you left room in your inn for Jesus?

Mat 13:33-35 “Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”

Phil 2:5-11 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

Maybe the innkeeper didn’t know just Who Jesus was.

Mat 16:16 “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Peter knew who Jesus was. The Spirit revealed it to him.

Mary knew who Jesus was. The angels told the shepherds. Mary pondered everything in her heart. Do you ponder in your heart the things of Jesus?

Deut 29:29 “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

Nobody brought gifts when Jesus was born. The shepherds didn’t bring gifts. The wise men didn’t come until later.

God has revealed Himself, but some are missing it.

2 Cor 4:6 “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Col 2:9 “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

Do you know who Jesus really is?

Heb 1:3 “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:”

2 Cor 4:4 “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Joseph was sweating. The innkeeper didn’t have room for Jesus. He was spiritually blind. If you don’t see, the world will give you things to fill up your life with.

If you truly understand who He is, make room for Him.

The innkeeper might have been ignorant or maybe he didn’t care. Can you image anyone allowing a young woman to give birth in a barn? Joseph probably told the innkeeper what was going on. How could the innkeeper allow the Savior of the world to be born in a place the cows eat out of? How could he not care? Did he care more about the money? Why wouldn’t he do something? Why didn’t he? Will you?

Why not give up his own room? There is no mention later after the rush if the innkeeper checked up on them. Was Jesus edged out because of too many other guests?

What about your life?

Has Jesus been edged out because of all the responsibility and important people in your life? You need to care. You need to feel the importance of the coming of Jesus.

Mary knew Jesus was coming! You don’t ignore a woman in travail! Get that same urgency in your spirit! Listen, world, Jesus is coming! Move! Make room for Jesus!

Luke 18:8 “ I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?”

1 Thes 5:1-3 “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”

Like a thief in the night, Jesus is coming! Turn your heart towards Him. Let people know! Care about Jesus’ coming.

Maybe the innkeeper was just too busy, too involved with the other guests. Maybe he didn’t even know. Being too busy with other pressing needs, he might have been too busy for Jesus. He had a huge crowd, a bunch of money, but no room for Jesus.

This was prophesied, but it was also prophesied that Jesus would be rejected.

Is 53:3 “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”

Luke 8:14 “And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.”

Luke 21:34 “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.”

If you’re too busy to pray, you’re too busy! It’s a season of busyness right now, so people don’t have room for Jesus! Are you like the innkeeper? Do you not know who Jesus is? Do you not care? Or do you not have time?

Some insist that this season shouldn’t be called Christmas, but Winter Break. The heroes of today are Tiny Tim, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolf. What about Jesus?

Do you not like this season and can’t wait for it to be over? If you are too busy for Jesus and your family, you are too busy.

If you are empty, lonely, and unfulfilled, Emmanuel is here. He is not just God somewhere out there. He’s not just an overseer, Master of the Universe, distant. Jesus is Emmanuel—God with us.

Make room for Him.

He owns it all, but you need to make room for Him.
