1 Cor 3:9-13 “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.”
Jesus alone is the chief cornerstone.
You can go no further until you get the revelation that Jesus IS God in the flesh!
Peter said, ‘You are God in flesh, the Son of the Living God.’ As the foundation has been already laid, you cannot lay another foundation. You must understand who Jesus Christ is.
There are others who try to decrease who Jesus is. The purpose is not to argue, rather it is simply to state, we must be built upon the foundation that Jesus Himself set.
Jesus created the water He walked upon. He sent manna from heaven in Moses’ day and He caused bread enough to feed 5000. The Messiah was not just the Son of God. He was the flesh of Almighty God.
God needed a sacrifice in human flesh and He looked, but found none. So, He, Himself became the sacrifice.
Matthew 1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Luke 2:11 “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”
John 1:1-3, 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Col 1:16 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
Eph 2:20 “And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;”
Deut 6:4-13 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.”
We have only one (1) God. The Egyptians worshipped animals and various other gods. God spoke through Moses and told the people there is only One True God who delivered them from bondage. Everywhere they were to teach this, to their children and to each other.
Joshua spoke a proclamation.
Joshua 24:15-16, 21 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;” (21) “And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord.”
Judges 2:7 “And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.”
The people served the Lord as long as those people who remembered the way God led them out of Egypt.
Judges 2:10-14 “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim: And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger. And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth. And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.”
Their kids left the Lord.
Deut 6:11-12 “And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”
If your world is in a tailspin, but your feet are planted on the foundation of the Rock of Jesus, you’ll make it no matter what.
Our God, Himself, Jesus Christ, is our foundation. Also, Moses, the prophets, Elijah, the Apostles are there. The doctrine, their teachings, are there. If you don’t have that foundation, you will fall.
A man built his house on sand and water has a way to shift the sand. The house shifted with it. The storm was too strong and the house fell. Another man built his house on a rock, but the rain and the wind couldn’t tear it down.
Doctrine is our foundation and holds the church up. The beauty of the building doesn’t hold the church up, it’s the foundation that holds it up. The day you lose your doctrine, your world will start to fall.
There was the Apostolic age where the foundation was laid, but about three generations later, pagan philosophers began to influence the church. The new philosophers were ‘illuminated’ and spoke against those who followed what the Apostles actually said.
John Calvin preached against all kinds of worldliness but was persecuted for it. Martin Luther was a Catholic monk and tried to bring change. John Wesley was strict and part of the Holiness Movement. He preached against worldly music and jewelry.
Catholics believed that if you didn’t quite make it, you could end up in purgatory and have your relatives pay your way out so you could still go to heaven. Martin Luther said, ‘No. It’s justification by faith. It’s not works.’
John Wesley said, ‘Yes, there’s grace, but we need to be sanctified. No drinking or smoking.’ He was part of the idea of a method to being holy—Methodists.
Then, their hearts grew cold and their kids didn’t buy into it. A group came along that saw in Scripture the need for the Holy Ghost to make us holy. A teacher had his students go on a fast to find out how you knew you had the Holy Ghost. They agreed that the sign was speaking in tongues. Tongues isn’t the Holy Ghost, rather it’s the sign for having received this.
From there, Azusa Street in California had soul after soul receiving the Holy Ghost. People prayed and lives were changed. They saw their need for the Bible and the Spirit. There were signs and wonders. It didn’t start there, it all started in 33AD.
People were persecuted for their beliefs. If you dig deep enough, you’ll find that there are some things in our foundation that we need today. We must follow today. Without this foundation, we will fall.
Supernatural things take place in our foundation. We have access to the power of heaven through prayer. Celebration and shouting are part of our foundation. Eating is part of our foundation. Laying on of hands is part of our foundation. Baptizing in Jesus’ Name for the remission of sins, total immersion is part of our foundation. Healings are part of our foundation.
Jer 6:16 “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”
Ez 3:12-13 “But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy: So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.”
There were glory and power that the old men remembered. When a foundation is laid, it stirs up the church.
