The Significance of the Name

http:::www.freedigitalphotos.net:images:Business_people_g201-Delegate_Badge_p67791.htmlEx 3:11-14 “And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.”

Acts 4:10-12 “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

In Hebrew culture, the name is the nature and essence of who someone is. The name is tied to an action and reputation.

You profane the name of God by disobeying or by showing disrespect. We’re not talking about harm done to a word, it’s about harm done to a reputation. The name should be given just as much respect as the person.

In Jewish culture, the most important of God’s name is YHVH. The root word of this means ‘to be’. It reflects the fact that God is eternal.

It can be shortened to Jah as in Hallelujah, meaning ‘praise the Lord’.

God is also known as El Shaddai, ‘God is Sufficient.’ Our God is more than enough.

Jehovah-Savot means ‘Lord of Hosts’ in the sense of leadership and sovereignty in battle. Moses never knew God this way, but it appears many times in the Psalms of David, Isaiah.

Sometimes the wilderness is tough and you need a God who is enough. When the wilderness is done, you need a God who knows how to organize an army and fight battles.

These names they used for God were descriptions of His nature.

Just as the ancient Israelites were to destroy anything that related to idols, they were also not to destroy anything that was holy.

It looks as if the name of God was pronounced and spoken routinely. However, it wasn’t written because the paper could be destroyed.

When you study archeology, you see there were no alphabets until you get to Hebrew. Everything else was hieroglyphics.

The Name matters!

This Name has tremendous significance. YHVH. The word for death and the word for truth are very similar, just the presence or absence of a simple tittle. Remove one tittle (or dot) from truth and you get death!

Yod Heh Vav Heh. God ascribed this to Himself. Yod represents ‘hand,’ the hand of the creator. It is the most frequently used in all of Scripture. It is very small and also symbolizes humility. He is our creator who is meek. Heh symbolizes ‘promise’ or ‘to reveal’ ‘to behold’ ‘manifest’. Vav is symbolic of ‘man’ and has a numerical value of six, not quite perfect, and ‘nail’. Woven into the Name of God is the symbol for God. Hand—Behold—Nail—Hand.

Jehovah Jirah ‘our Provider’

Jehovah Shalom ‘our Peace’

Jehovah Savior ‘Jesus’ or ‘God has become my Salvation.’

There is one Lord and one Name whereby we must be saved.

Isaiah 52:6 “Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.”

Phi 2:10 “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;”

When Paul was knocked to the ground on the road to Damascus, he asked, ‘Who are you?’ He answered, ‘I am Jesus!’ The name revealed was ‘Jehovah Salvation’. This is the full revelation of the one who has hands and who reveals and who has nails and who reveals again.

One Name. ‘I AM’ ‘I AM Savior’

You don’t have to call on any other name, it’s all in Jesus.

In what name did Peter heal? It was the name of Jesus.

Jesus stood on the isle of Patmos for John when he was a prisoner. He said, ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the Almighty, the first and the last.’ He is A through Z. He is every letter and every word of God.

In pagan days, the people had a god for every day of the week and every month. To have only one God was counter to that. ‘The devils also believe there is one God and tremble.’ There is only one God. God doesn’t know any other God than Himself. Everything that describes God, all his nature and character, is wrapped in that Name—Jesus.

His Name is Jesus!

It’s all about Salvation and that’s the importance of the Name, Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins!

Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”

Colossians 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Great sermon preached by my pastor! Names have a much greater significance than we realize, especially when it concerns ancient names.
