Ex 30:34-35 “And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:”
Ecc 10:1 “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”
Anointing oil was used in the tabernacle of Moses. Everyone and everything was anointed, including clothing, stuff, people, etc. Today, the anointing is not physical, it is spiritual with the anointing of the Holy Ghost.
Some people’s anointing has gotten stinky.
Funky means ‘a strong and musty odor’. ‘Cooked greens make the kitchen smell really funky.’ A bad smell. It used to have a good meaning, but today, it’s no longer a compliment.
The anointing oil is supposed to smell sweet, but if dead flies get in, the oil starts to stink.
Don’t let your oil run out, but also don’t let it stink.
- Liquid myrrh used in preparation for bodies being buried. It needed to be crushed in order to get that aroma.
- Sweet cinnamon used to counter the smell of the animal sacrifices. If you want to be anointed you need something crushed and beaten and something that is sweet.
- Calamus grows in miry soil, in wretched soil. In order to get the fragrance out, the plant needs to be beaten. The more you beat it, the better it smelled.
- Cassia grows way up high. To get it, you had to climb for it.
- Olive oil can only be extracted, squeezed, crushed.
This is all mixed together and used to anoint everything in the tabernacle. Sometimes, if it was left somewhere unattended, in the heat of the desert, the scent of this oil attracted flies. Flies are creatures that like stinky things.
Sometimes, when you play hard, you start to stink. Basketball, running, etc. causes you to stink, but you can stink spiritually too. You need to get into the shower of God and wash that stuff off. Get rid of that funk.
Flies come when you aren’t looking and cause you to lose honor. Protect your oil! Remember who you are. Care for your oil. Those flies cause the oil to stink.
I Cor 5:6-8 “Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
In Italy, there is a tradition for the New Year where they throw out the window something in their lives that symbolizes stuff in their lives they want to get rid of.
Passover is not about the lamb, it’s about the leaven. It’s more important to get rid of the leaven, the sin in your life. You have to have the blood on the outside and the lamb on the inside in order to escape from Egypt. It’s called the Feast of Unleavened Bread because the bread didn’t have time to rise. Get the leaven out. The Jews get rid of all the leaven in their homes before Passover every year. This is the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This represents a practice that separates them from sin. They needed to get out of Egypt and get to God.
It wasn’t about getting them out of Egypt, it was about getting Egypt out of them so they could worship the Lord.
Leaven causes fermentation and happens naturally in certain fruits and breads. Yeast is a single-celled organism. In the right conditions, it will corrupt whatever it comes in contact with. Fermentation is viewed as a process of corruption. Leaven symbolizes all the hidden influences.
Back in ancient times, they didn’t have packages of yeast. Naturally, it took as long as a week. So, they took their dough and held back a small lump and put it in a dark place to keep it. When they got ready to make another loaf, they took that little lump and mixed it with the new loaf. It was very quick-acting and a little bit affected the entire loaf. Paul said, ‘just a little bit of leaven leaveneth the whole lump.’ The corruption of something so small messes up the whole thing.
Something small that no one can see will mess up your whole life.
Sometimes, you need fresh oil and get that funky smell out of your life. Paul said in 1 Cor 5:7 “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:”
The Day of Pentecost had a bunch of people who looked like they were crazy, like they were drunk, like their minds were taken over. People asked questions and Peter said in Acts 2:15-19 “For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:”
You can do all kinds of stuff to look good, but you’ve got to get new ointment and get rid of that old ointment. Go to the altar and pour it all out and get some fresh and new ointment. Be an empty vessel for the Lord to fill. As long as there is an empty vessel, oil will be poured out.
David said, ‘My cup runs over.’ If you can’t get past those old mistakes, God has fresh oil for YOU!
Some of you have flies, funk, and fermentation all over your oil. You already have an anointing, but pour it out and let God give you something new, renewal, refreshing. Let your light shine and get rid of the junk. It’s not about being perfect, it’s emptying yourself out and letting God fill you up. Hear His call and know you are chosen, but let it be fresh and new.
Clear out ALL that stuff, all the funk, the flies, the fermentation and let God fill you up with fresh oil!
It’s great that you got out of Egypt, but you need to get Egypt all the way out of you. The old high was fun, but hang out with the Most High now. He is so much better. God can’t give you all He wants to until you dump it all out.
