Mat 13:44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.”
There was a treasure buried in a field. I think it was more like a gold mine or silver mine or oil that some passer-by happened upon. The Bible says that for the joy that the man had in the discovery, he was excited about it. He got smart. The only problem was he didn’t own the field. So, he came up with a plan. Jesus said, the kingdom of heaven was like that, a transaction.
Now, there’s a good deal and a bad deal for each person in this transaction. The owner of the field had this treasure. This man who bought it said he sold everything to buy the field. Jesus was very purposeful in his words. ‘The words that I speak unto you are spirit and life.’ There was a treasure in a field. There is something about the kingdom of God that is similar to that treasure hidden in a field that we don’t own. There is a price that you can pay to own that field so that you can enjoy that treasure. That price is everything that you have, not a penny less, and not a penny more. It will cost you everything.
We’re talking about God’s kingdom. Church isn’t just pews and lights and kids’ songs and adults singing and dancing. Somewhere buried beneath the soil is a treasure that some of you haven’t seen or experienced yet. You can keep your stuff, but you have to sell out in order to possess that field.
In our world today, we exchange all kinds of things. If we have money, we can exchange that for something else. If you’re in Mexico or Sicily, you can bargain for a better price. There’s a great deal of emotion when an exchange is made.
Is 61:3 “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”
God said, ‘You give me those ashes, and I’ll give you beauty. For the sadness, I’ll pour oil that will bring joy to you. For the spirit of heaviness, pushed down, depression, I’ll give you the garment of praise.’ Give that to Jesus and He will give to you a garment that will make you want to praise. Jesus wants to take the bad deal so we can have a good deal.
The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. God has given you more than all the money the world has to give.
In a field, you can build fences to protect the field. You need to keep those who would steal from you, who would destroy you, out! There is a thief that wants to rob, steal, kill and destroy. Build those fences.
That man bought the field. You gotta get dirty and dig to get to that treasure. The joy of salvation is glorious. There’s a bad deal and a good deal waiting for you. God is willing to sell out for very little. If you give everything that you have, He will give everything that He has.
‘What will a man give in exchange for his soul?’ What will it profit a man if he wins the mega millions, but he loses his soul? In the eyes of God a soul is so much more valuable than anything else the world has to offer. God is so willing to make the exchange.
Psalms 30:11 “Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;”
Prov 23:23 “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” You’ve got to buy it, hold onto it. You have to do something with it, protect it.
